Operations Science in Healthcare and Healthcare Services

Mark has more than 25 years of experience in operations and supply chain, as an employee of manufacturing companies and as a consultant to healthcare organizations. Starting his career in the automotive industry, he has learned directly from many Toyota-trained and educated leaders and experts on the Toyota Production System and Lean. His passion for operations science helps improve healthcare operations for the sake of patients, clinicians, and other staff members.

Mark is the author of books including Lean Hospitals and Healthcare Kaizen, both recipients of the Shingo Institute’s Research and Professional Publication award. He is the author of Measures of Success, a book about applying statistical methods to business metrics. His upcoming book about learning from mistakes is titled The Mistakes That Make Us.

Mark earned a bachelor of science in industrial engineering from the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University, where he took a class with Dr. Mark Spearman, co-author of Factory Physics and one of the founders of Operations Science. He also earned a masters of business administration and a masters of science in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as a fellow in the Leaders for Global Operations program.
